Newsflash

A group of 106 Mt. Kinabalu climbers led by Mr. Jimmy Lim, Mr. Engu Chong Gee, Mr. Foo Jong Wee, Mr. Lim Chie Wan and Mr. Ting Ted Sun have volunteered to embark on a charity event called, ‘A Piece Of Hope Chapter 2’, to raise money to benefit PPKKCTM. This group of climbers have trek up Mt. Kinabalu 8 times consecutively in the past and this 9th year will see them doing so from 12th to 16th  July 2008 where they hope to raise RM150,000.00 through corporate and individual donations. This is their 2nd year doing a charity climb. In their first, they managed to raise RM120,000.00 for a NGO underprivileged children home in Selangor and you can check this out at http://apieceofhope.blogspot.com.

Why ‘A Piece Of Hope?’ The piece here represents a piece of jigsaw puzzle showing a picture symbolising hope for PKKCTM’s children. Each of the 106 climbers will carry a piece of the jigsaw puzzle and trek up from the base to the top of Mt. Kinabalu. Upon reaching the 4095.2m summit, the pieces will be assembled to form the whole jigsaw puzzle. Each piece brings one HOPE to a child but with many pieces, they bring HOPE to a whole generation. These same pieces of jigsaw puzzle will be given to PPKKCTM as a memorabilia and reminder that YOU had made a big difference in their lives.

These climbers are now seeking your kind support and donation, which is tax-exempted. Donations can be made by cheque payable to Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Taman Megah and send to No.2, Jalan SS24/10, Taman Megah, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Please use the enclosed form when sending in your donation. Upon receipt of your donation, PPKKCTM will send you by post a written tax-exempt receipt (Tax-exemption: LHDN.01/35/42.51/179-6.4935). The success of this event can only be accomplished with the generosity of your donation.

We thank you for your time and consideration and look forward to whatever support you can provide. Pusat Background

Pusat Penjagaan Kanak Kanak Cacat Taman Megah (“the Pusat”) runs a home for the disabled and the underprivileged.

The Pusat was founded by the Late Mr. Manikumar a/l S. Kanan, himself physically handicapped, with a vision to provide an environment for the betterment of young disabled children, for their difficulties to be recognized and for them to be given equal status in the society. He dedicated his whole life to fulfill his vision, until he suddenly passed away in a motor vehicle accident in 2006, at the age of 43. Even on his last journey, he was on the road to raise funds for these children. His death came as a total shock and left a huge void in the Pusat. In recognition of his services, he was posthumously awarded the NST – Price Waterhouse Coopers Malaysian the Lifetime Humanitarian Award by the Hon. Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in December 2006.

There are 138 children of all races living at the Pusat, ranging in age from 7 months to 55 years old and coming from all over peninsular Malaysia. About a 100 of these children are disabled with various disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, global delay, muscular dystrophy, dwarfism, apeth syndrome, neunan syndrome, hyper activity, physical challenges, intellectual disabilities as well as speech, audio and visual impairments. The rest are normal children who come from broken, abused or single parent backgrounds. Sixty seven children going to school; of these twenty five are normal children and go to normal schools, one is in nursery while the rest are in the special school.

Seventy of our children are residing at Taman Megah in four houses [No. 2, 10, 12, SS 24/10 and No.25, SS24/1] and forty of our children Reside at a rented house at No.31, SS3/39. The premise No. 2, SS24/10 is owned by Pusat, No. 10&12, SS 24/10 were purchased for the Pusat by the Lee Yan Lian Charitable Trust and No.25, SS24/1 by an individual.

Building Fund

Although the Pusat is doing yeoman service, this decentralized system of housing its residents in different buildings is not in the best interest of the residents and has caused other difficulties for the administration. Mindful of the feedback from the relevant authorities and the Taman Megah Residents Association, the Pusat has entered into an agreement for the purchase of a piece of land – Lot 13488 (33982 Sq. ft.) on which we intend to build a one-stop centre. The total cost of the project (building plus land) is expected to be in the region of RM 6 million.

In January 2009, the Pusat fully settled the deal for the land and is having the soil tested for building requirements. Once this is completed the design process will begin led by our architect. RM 5.5 million projected to be the cost of the building yet to be built on this land, subject to the design of the architect. The Pusat currently has RM 200 000.00 raised to put towards this project with RM 5.8 million left to be raised so financial assistance is needed to remedy this pressing issue.

Needless to say, we do not possess the financial strength to settle this problem alone.  Therefore, the Pusat has launched an all-out fundraising drive and welcomes any form of assistance from kind hearted souls.

FOUNDER ~ S.K. MANIKUMAR

13 SEPTEMBER 1962 – 26 APRIL 2006

Mr. Manikumar was born on 13th September 1962. As a baby, he suffered from polio, the result of which was he had a visible shortening in his left leg. As a young man, he went to Taman Sinar Harapan (a home for the mentally and physically challenged, run by the government in Kuala Kubu Baru, Selangor) with the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Organization and did what he could to bring a little joy to the residents there. While volunteering his services at Taman Sinar Harapan, a thought grew in his mind: ‘why not set up a home for the disabled.’ With that thought in mind, he rented a double storey corner house in Taman Megah and started a home for the disabled, in early 1992. In the beginning he had four children in his care. He bathed, fed, taught and trained the children, he did whatever needed to be done for them.  His vision was to provide an environment for the betterment of young disabled children, for their difficulties to be recognized and for them to be given equal status in society. Mr Manikumar believed in four key fundamentals, that the organization remain non-religious, non-political, non-government and non-profit.
