Pusat Background
Pusat Penjagaan Kanak Kanak Cacat Taman Megah (“the Pusat”) runs a home for the disabled and the underprivileged. The Pusat was founded by the Late Mr. Manikumar a/l S. Kanan, himself physically handicapped, with a vision to provide an environment for the betterment of young disabled children, for their difficulties to be recognized and for them to be given equal status in the society. He dedicated his whole life to fulfill his vision, until he suddenly passed away in a motor vehicle accident in 2006, at the age of 43. Even on his last journey, he was on the road to raise funds for these children. His death came as a total shock and left a huge void in the Pusat. In recognition of his services, he was posthumously awarded the NST – Price Waterhouse Coopers Malaysian the Lifetime Humanitarian Award by the Hon. Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in December 2006. There are 138 children of all races living at the Pusat, ranging in age from 7 months to 55 years old and coming from all over peninsular Malaysia. About a 100 of these children are disabled with various disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, global delay, muscular dystrophy, dwarfism, apeth syndrome, neunan syndrome, hyper activity, physical challenges, intellectual disabilities as well as speech, audio and visual impairments. The rest are normal children who come from broken, abused or single parent backgrounds. Sixty seven children going to school; of these twenty five are normal children and go to normal schools, one is in nursery while the rest are in the special school. Seventy of our children are residing at Taman Megah in four houses [No. 2, 10, 12, SS 24/10 and No.25, SS24/1] and forty of our children Reside at a rented house at No.31, SS3/39. The premise No. 2, SS24/10 is owned by Pusat, No. 10&12, SS 24/10 were purchased for the Pusat by the Lee Yan Lian Charitable Trust and No.25, SS24/1 by an individual. Building Fund
Although the Pusat is doing yeoman service, this decentralized system of housing its residents in different buildings is not in the best interest of the residents and has caused other difficulties for the administration. Mindful of the feedback from the relevant authorities and the Taman Megah Residents Association, the Pusat has entered into an agreement for the purchase of a piece of land – Lot 13488 (33982 Sq. ft.) on which we intend to build a one-stop centre. The total cost of the project (building plus land) is expected to be in the region of RM 6 million.
In January 2009, the Pusat fully settled the deal for the land and is having the soil tested for building requirements. Once this is completed the design process will begin led by our architect. RM 5.5 million projected to be the cost of the building yet to be built on this land, subject to the design of the architect. The Pusat currently has RM 200 000.00 raised to put towards this project with RM 5.8 million left to be raised so financial assistance is needed to remedy this pressing issue. Needless to say, we do not possess the financial strength to settle this problem alone. Therefore, the Pusat has launched an all-out fundraising drive and welcomes any form of assistance from kind hearted souls.

Volunteers Needed
The Pusat attracts visitors and volunteers from all walks of life– college students, corporate bodies, religious groups, humanitarian aid groups ... the list is endless. All are impressed by the cleanliness and level of care given. Students from Mara & MAHSA do their practical training in occupational and physiotherapy at the Pusat. However, the Pusat children, like us, are in need of love and attention, education and entertainment. The Pusat is constantly looking out for volunteers who are willing to spend some of their own precious time each week to: a. coach the normal but underprivileged in their school work;b. organize educational activitiesc. organize sports activitiesd. organize art classes, sewing classes etc If you can provide any of the above, you can bring countless joy to all of them. Income / Expenditure
It costs approximately RM60, 000.00++ to run the Pusat. A breakdown of the monthly expenditure is attached. The Pusat has no independent or regular source of income. Initially 2/3 of funds needed to run the Home came from sales of souvenirs produced at the Pusat by the special children and remaining 1/3 came from parents, individuals, and companies and corporations. Unfortunately, the Pusat has no license to sell souvenirs; therefore it is now dependent entirely on donations from the public. All donations to the Pusat are exempted from income tax. | | Monthly Expenses List | | No. | Particulars | RM | I. | Telephone Bill * | 420.00 | 2 | Stationeries * | 380.00 | 3 | Medical Fee * | 2500.00 | 4 | Toiletries * | 1500.00 | 5 | Kindergarten fee | 850.00 | 6 | School transport | 4500.00 | 7 | Utilities (for 5 Unit - Water & Electric) | 5000.00 | 8 | Holistic Education Fee( for mentally disabled) | 720.00 | 9 | Van Installment Repayment | 980.00 | 10 | Massage Therapy Fee | 1500.00 | 11 | Occupational Therapy Fee | 1900.00 | 12 | Physiotherapy Fee (3) | 4600.00 | 13 | Fresh /Dry Food | 5000.00 | 14 | Special Tutors Fee(handicrafts / skills training for older children) | 2550.00 | 15 | House Loan Repayment | 2701.00 | 16 | Staff wages | 21050.00 | 17 | Rental for No 31, Jalan SS3/39 | 4500.00 | 18 | | | | Total | 60651.00 | | | | | | | * Estimation. | | | | | | | | The above does not include medical bills, | | | | renovation costs for the properties, | | | | vehicle repairs, the disabled children’s | | | | special equipment nor the cost of purchasing these | | | | | |
